Tech’s Orwin Smith seeks pinnacle

by Ken Sugiura
AJC

Orwin Smith’s personal goal for the season is flavored with boldness and hints of audacity.

The Georgia Tech A-back wants to lead the country in all-purpose yardage, which would require him to assemble one of the greatest seasons in school history. Smith, whose chiseled 6-foot-0, 205-pound frame contains ample boldness, is game.

Tech wide receivers planning to surprise

by Ken Sugiura
AJC

It was everything to put a Georgia Tech fan at ease and perhaps even raise hope. QuarterbackTevin Washington unleashed a pass from about the 40-yard line to the corner of the end zone.

Wide receiver Jeremy Moore outmaneuvered a cornerback and dove headlong. With one outstretched hand, Moore captured the ball and brought it back to his body while touching down inbounds with both feet.

Tech hoping diet, yoga part of the answer

by Ken Sugiura
AJC

Georgia Tech guard Omoregie Uzzi and quarterback Tevin Washington live in symbiosis. Uzzi, the two-time All-ACC lineman, shields defensive tackles out of arm’s reach from Washington. Uzzi can explain his teammate and roommate’s returned benefit.

“We live right by the Krispy Kreme, so he makes sure I don’t make so many trips over there,” he said.

Tech in 2012: It’s a chance for Paul Johnson to look smart

 by Mark Bradley
AJC

On the morning of Nov. 28, 2009, Paul Johnson was poised to become the unchallenged king of football in a state that takes the sport seriously. He was 19-5 in two seasons as Georgia Tech’s coach. That night his Jackets would play Georgia, whom they’d famously beaten 45-42 in Athens the year before.

Tech was 10-1, ranked No. 7 nationally and champion of the ACC Coastal Division. Georgia was 6-5, having just lost at home to Kentucky. Not since George O’Leary was working against Jim Donnan had Tech beaten the Bulldogs twice in a row – Chan Gailey, O’Leary’s successor, hadn’t done it even once – and now Johnson was roundly favored to make it 2-for-2 against the hated Mutts.

Paul Johnson Q&A: Tech capable of winning ACC

by Ken Sugiura
AJC

On the day before his team will report for the start of fall camp, Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson was in his newly renovated office, showing off his “smart glass” windows that look onto Bobby Dodd Stadium. At the flip of a switch, the panes transform from clear to tinted.

“Recruits like it,” Johnson said. “They think it’s pretty cool.”

Johnson also addressed more substantive topics Wednesday in an interview with the AJC, including his prospects for various players, the team’s work over the summer and his hopes for the season. Questions and answers were edited for brevity and clarity.

10 things you didn’t know about Tech assistant David Walkosky

by Ken Sugiura
AJC

Georgia Tech special-teams coordinator David Walkosky tries to direct young males running around and wreaking havoc – and then he goes to work.

Walkosky is the father of four boys under the age of six, including twin two-year-olds.

“It’s 100 percent the same – controlled chaos,” he said.

Paul Johnson at Media Days: 'I love the attitude of our team'

By Ken Sugiura

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson’s optimism for the upcoming season hardly cause any jaws to drop, given the hopeful talk that every coach at ACC Media Days offered Tuesday. Regardless, with fall camp opening Aug. 3, Johnson sounded like a coach who likes the work his team has done over the summer.

“I love the attitude of our team right now,” Johnson said during a 47-minute interview with reporters.

Tech's Attaochu makes up with Hokies' Thomas

By Ken Sugiura

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

GREENSBORO, N.C.—Jeremiah Attaochu got his arm around Logan Thomas Sunday. Once again, the Georgia Tech linebacker didn’t take him down to the ground.

Instead, he smiled and mugged for the camera with the Virginia Tech quarterback. Attaochu, who threw a punch out of frustration at Thomas in the Yellow Jackets’ 37-26 loss to the Hokies last season, has not just moved past the incident. He is now a buddy with the Hokies star he’ll be chasing around in the season opener Sept. 3 in Blacksburg, Va.

10 things you didn’t know about Buzz Preston

by Ken Sugiura
AJC

Greetings-

The third installment of interviews with Georgia Tech assistants, following Al Groh and Charles Kelly. I’ve enjoyed doing these. Hopefully you’ve enjoyed reading them…

The Georgia Tech assistant coach who helped Demaryius Thomas get drafted in the first round of the 2010 NFL draft and Stephen Hill in the second round this past April also fondly remembers his days at the University of Hawaii and his upbringing in Los Angeles and took a roundabout path to college.

Georgia Tech strength coach John Sisk building momentum

By Ken Sugiura

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

John Sisk did not arrive at Georgia Tech with bravado. The walls of the Yellow Jackets’ weight room underneath the Bobby Dodd Stadium stands do not bear signs repeating his mantras. Tech players aren’t walking around with slogans on T-shirts.

“Not right now,” said Sisk, Tech’s new strength and conditioning coach. “Just work. That’s the big thing, just work.”
